Wealth is crucial for security, opportunities, access to political power and protection against economic crises. Black families in the U.S. possess 7-10x less wealth than white families. Consequently, we have been disproportionately affected by Covid-19 everything.
Systematic injustices cause racial disparities in housing, health care, and business policies. More than 40% of Black Americans live in counties at high risk of disruption from the pandemic. Mortality rates from Covid-19 are 2-3x higher for Black Americans. Almost 40% of all Black jobs have been threatened. And more than 40% of Black Businesses have failed.
Underrepresentation of Black businesses throttles, not only, employment but the development of Black communities and the entire U.S. economy. As a society, we can use the urgency of the pandemic to build and sustain more equitable systems that increase the long-term resilience of Black Americans, Black communities, and Black institutions.
